Inspire your life with the vivid images of natural beauty found on woven polypropylene feed sacks. Upcycled feed sacks are an excellent fabric for making clutch purses of all sizes and shapes. The fabric is exceptionally strong for safely carrying heavy loads and extremely easy to keep clean and sanitary with a damp cloth and household cleansers.
We have created an easy clutch purse pattern to encourage everyone to recycle their feed sacks into beautiful and practical custom works of usable art. All you need to get started is some basic sewing skills and a few woven polypropylene feed sacks. Use your imagination to add custom touches and trims to the patterns. And remember to have fun.
This pattern makes a simple zipper clutch purse from woven polypropylene feed sack fabric. Beautiful imagery from a feed sack is on the front of the clutch and the back can be made with leather or other fabrics for a mixed media clutch purse.
This basic pattern is makes a clutch that is 9 wide, 6 inches high, and 3 inches deep at the bottom with a 8 inch zipper closure. The dimension of the pattern can easily be adjusted to make a different size clutch or to accommodate different sized feed sack imagery.
The materials needed for this pattern are:
• Woven polypropylene feed sack with beautify imagery for clutch front.
• Fabric or leather for clutch back.
• Zipper sized for the dimensions of the clutch.
Instructions
Step 1. Clean and flatten the woven polypropylene feed sack.
Step 2. Cut out the two sides of the clutch using the following dimensions. The dimensions can be adjusted to accommodate unique feed sack imagery or make a different size clutch.
Step 3. Assemble the front and back of the clutch using the following steps.
A. Measure and mark a foldline 1 inch from the top of the clutch front and back.
B. With wrong sides together, fold 1 inch of the top of the clutch front to the wrong side along the foldline.
C. With wrong sides together, fold 1 inch of the top of the clutch back to the wrong side along the foldline.
D. Use your hands to press the folds flat.
Step 4. Sew zipper to the top of the clutch using the following steps.
A. Use clips or pins to secure zipper to the underside of the top edge of the clutch front while sewing.
B. Use topstitching to attach the zipper to the clutch front as shown in the figure.
C. Use clips or pins to secure zipper to the underside of the top edge of the clutch back while sewing.
D. Use topstitching to attach the zipper to the clutch back as shown in the figure.
Step 5. Sew the sides and bottom of the clutch purse.
A. On the wrong side of the clutch front, measure and mark a 1/2 inch stitching line along the sides and bottom of the clutch.
B. Make sure the clutch front and back top edges line up at the zipper ends.
C. Use pins or clips to hold the front and back together while sewing.
D. With the clutch wrong side out, stitch along the sides and bottom of the clutch.
E. Press the side seams and the bottom seam of the clutch open with your hands to make flat seams.
Step 6. Make box corners to add depth to the bottom of the clutch purse.
A. Pull the corners of the bottom of the clutch to create a flat bottom.
B. Match the bottom seam to the side seam on each slide of the clutch.
C. Pin or clip to hold the corners in place while sewing.
D. Mark two stitch lines for the depth of the clutch. A good depth is 2 to 3 inches for a smaller clutch. Center the stitch lines on the bottom seam of the clutch on both corners.
E. Sew along the stitch lines to form the box corners on the bottom of the clutch.
F. Press the box corner seams flat with your hands to make crisp corner seams.
Step 7. Finish the Clutch Purse.
A. Turn the clutch right side out.
B. Add a thin leather strap or other decorations as a zipper pull.
